Peloton outdoor runs: getting the GPS out
Peloton outdoor runs and walks record a GPS route, and Peloton's exports are syncs, not files: Strava and Garmin Connect. Turn the sync on, let the run arrive, and take the GPX from Strava. Indoor rides have no route at all.
Peloton has two kinds of workout, and only one of them has a route. Indoor rides and runs on the equipment record power, cadence, heart rate and no positions. Outdoor runs and walks recorded with the Peloton app on a phone record GPS. The way out for those is not a download button — Peloton does not have one — but the syncs.
Connect Strava
In the Peloton app, the settings have a section for connected apps; connect Strava. Workouts sync across, and an outdoor run arrives with its route. On strava.com, the GPX is then in the activity's more menu — export a GPX from Strava — and *Export Original* returns the file Peloton sent.
Or Garmin Connect
Peloton also syncs to Garmin Connect, which was added more recently than the Strava link. Garmin Connect exports an activity as GPX or the original file — export from Garmin Connect.
Indoor rides
An indoor ride on Strava is a workout with numbers and no map. There is no route to export, and nothing to print as a line. The numbers are real — the data prints draw a year of rides as a grid whether they had GPS or not — but a route print needs a route.
The one-way problem
Both syncs carry workouts forward from when they are connected. Runs from before that do not come across automatically; check the app for a way to re-send, or accept that the history starts at the connection.
Then what
Any GPX, FIT or TCX opens in the viewer to check it, uploads to Strava (how), and goes into the editor to become a print of the route with the numbers from the file. The other watches and apps are in the device guides.
Questions people actually ask
- Can you export Peloton data?
- Through its connections: Peloton syncs workouts to Strava and to Garmin Connect. From Strava, any outdoor run exports as GPX on the website. There is no file download in the Peloton app itself for a route.
- How do I get a Peloton outdoor run into Strava?
- Connect Strava in the Peloton app's settings. Outdoor runs and walks recorded with the app sync to Strava with their route; from there the GPX is one click on strava.com.
- Does Peloton export a FIT file?
- Not as a download from the app. What reaches Strava and Garmin Connect is the workout with its data; on Strava, Export Original returns whatever Peloton sent. For an indoor ride that is power and heart rate with no positions.
- Can I print a Peloton ride?
- An indoor ride has no route — nothing to draw. An outdoor run or walk does: sync it to Strava, export the GPX, and it prints like any other run.
