AllTrails: download a GPX of a trail or your own recording

On AllTrails the GPX download sits behind AllTrails+ for most people. Where the button is on the website and in the app, what the free account can and cannot do, and the alternatives for a recording you made yourself.

AllTrails records your hike and shows the route; getting the route out as a file is where the free plan stops for most people. Here is where the download is, and what to do if it is behind the paywall.

Where the download is

On alltrails.com, open a trail or one of your recordings. The page has a download option that offers GPX and KML. In the app, the same option is on the trail or recording page under its menu.

What AllTrails+ has to do with it

The reports from people who have tried it are mostly consistent: the GPX download is an AllTrails+ feature, and a free account gets an upgrade prompt instead of a file. A few older write-ups say it was free; AllTrails has changed its plans several times, so the reliable test is your own account. Press the download; if it asks you to subscribe, it is not free for you.

Recording a hike, seeing the map, and sharing a link are free either way. It is only the file that is gated.

If you will not pay for the file

  • Record it twice. A watch — Garmin, Apple Watch, Coros, Suunto — records the same hike, and every one of them exports a GPX for free. The device guides.
  • Sync it out. AllTrails connects to some services; if yours syncs to Garmin Connect or Strava, the GPX comes out of those instead. Export a GPX from Strava.
  • A trail you did not record yourself is somebody's route, not your recording, and the print of it is a print of a plan. Track vs route.

The AllTrails GPX onto a Garmin

Once you have the file: import it as a course in Garmin Connect and sync, or copy it to the device over USB. Get a GPX onto a Garmin.

Then what

Any GPX, FIT or TCX opens in the viewer to check it, uploads to Strava (how), and goes into the editor to become a print of the route with the numbers from the file. The other watches and apps are in the device guides.

Questions people actually ask

Can AllTrails export GPX?
Yes. On the website, a trail or a recording has a download option that offers GPX (and KML). Most accounts of it say the download requires an AllTrails+ subscription; the free plan records and shows the route but does not hand over the file.
Is downloading a GPX from AllTrails free?
Reports differ, and AllTrails has changed its plans more than once. As of writing, the consistent answer is that GPX download is an AllTrails+ feature. Check the download button on your own account: if it asks you to upgrade, that is the answer for you.
How do I download my own recording from AllTrails?
Open the recording on alltrails.com, use the download option and choose GPX. If your plan does not allow it, record with a watch or a second app next time — the route recorded twice is the same route — or sync AllTrails to a service that does export.
How do I get an AllTrails route onto a Garmin?
Download the GPX and import it as a course in Garmin Connect, or copy it to the device over USB. The GPX-to-Garmin guide covers both.
