A running route poster is the run itself on paper: the line your watch recorded, drawn clean on museum paper with the numbers that were in the file. Not the official course map, not a stock print of a city. The one you did, on the day you did it, with your time under it.
One run, or all of them
One run is the route print: the shape of it as a single line, or the same line on a real map, with distance, time, pace in minutes per kilometre, elevation and the date set under it. The marathon, the first 10K, the run you did on holiday and still think about.
Many runs is the same product with a different motif. Drop in a year of files, or connect Strava and pick them all, and the sheet becomes a heatmap of where you run: every route drawn over the others, the roads you use most darkest. Or a coverage print, every run in one weight, the map of a habit.
What size a running route poster should be
A run is a small shape. A 10K around the park fills a 30×40 cm sheet comfortably and gets lost on a 70×100. A marathon through a city works at 50×70, where the loops and the out-and-backs have room. The heatmap of a year wants the big sheet. What size should a route print be goes through it with examples; the short version is that a single run rarely needs more than 50×70.
The numbers are the file's
Distance, moving time, pace, elevation gain and the date come from the recording, not from what the race said. That is why a marathon on the print reads 42.6 km and not 42.195: you ran the tangents wide, and the watch measured it. Why your marathon reads 42.6 km explains it, and you can choose which numbers appear.
A gift for a runner
A print of a run somebody else did needs their file, and there are two ways to get it. They export it themselves — Export GPX on strava.com is free on every plan — and send it to you. Or, if their activity is public on Strava, its page has a download button that gives you the route without their heart rate or pace. Gifts for runners and a gift for someone's first marathon are about choosing the run.
Your route, not your address
Every run from home starts at the front door. The first and last 500 metres are clipped before the line is drawn, in your browser, and the trim can go out to two kilometres. It never goes to zero. Hide your home on a route print.
