Nothing to draw: indoor training and prints
A winter of turbo sessions produces excellent data and no shape. What that means, and the one honest thing to print instead.
Every winter this question arrives: the training was real, the numbers are excellent, and nothing can be printed.
Why
A print is made from coordinates. An indoor activity has none.
A treadmill records belt speed and time. A turbo records power, cadence and heart rate. A pool swim counts lengths from wrist motion. All of it is real data about a real effort, and none of it says where.
Export the file and it will contain everything except the one thing a drawing needs.
Why we will not fake it
It would be easy to take a treadmill run's distance, find a loop of the same length near the address on file, and draw that. The print would look correct.
It would also be a picture of a run that did not happen, hanging on a wall as though it did. The whole premise of the object is that the line came out of a recording of something real. Break that once and every print in the catalogue means less.
Same answer for drawing an abstract shape from the numbers — a spiral whose length matches the distance, or a bar of the power curve. Those are charts. They are honest, and they are not what this is.
Virtual worlds are a genuine edge case
Files from virtual platforms sometimes carry coordinates in a fictional coordinate system, and some export as real-world-shaped GPX.
Technically those draw. Whether a lap of an imaginary island is the same category of object as a road you rode is a question about what the print is for, and it is yours to answer. We will draw what the file contains.
What to print instead
The outdoor part of the same period, as a heatmap.
A winter with three months of turbo work produces a thinner map than the winter felt — fewer lines, shorter routes, more gaps. That thinness is accurate. It is a picture of the outdoor half of a season that was mostly spent indoors, and the absence in it is the training that does not draw.
Questions people actually ask
- Can a treadmill run be printed?
- No. There is no position data, so there is no line. Distance and time exist; the shape does not.
- What about virtual routes from Zwift?
- A virtual course has coordinates in a virtual world, and some files carry them. Whether printing an imaginary island is the same kind of object is a question for you rather than for us.
- Do indoor sessions show in a heatmap?
- No. They contribute nothing, which means a winter map looks thinner than the winter felt.
- Is there any honest indoor print?
- The outdoor half of the same period, printed as a heatmap. What is missing from it is the indoor work, and that absence is accurate.
