What an indoor session leaves behind

Every other kind of effort leaves a line. An indoor session leaves a power file and a puddle.

This is the honest limit of what we make: if there are no GPS points, there is no route, and no amount of good intentions turns a two-hour turbo into a drawing. The file will be rejected, and the message will say why rather than pretending the format was wrong.

What to print instead

The obvious answer is the route you are training for. A winter of indoor work usually exists because of something outdoors in spring, and the drawing of that thing is a far better object than a chart of the sessions that got you there.

The second answer is a tee. Indoor training is the least ceremonial thing in sport — nobody photographs it, nobody puts it on a wall — and a garment suits it better than paper does. It gets worn to the next session, which is roughly the right relationship.

Why the line is drawn differently on cotton

Two changes, both because of the wash cycle.

The stroke is heavier. Anything thinner than about four points breaks up after twenty washes, and a faded print is worse than none.

The geometry is simplified — roughly a third fewer points. Fine detail that reads beautifully on 250 gsm paper turns to mush on a knitted surface, so the shape is kept and the wobble is dropped.

There is no map treatment on apparel for the same reason. Streets and contours need detail that cotton cannot hold.

The rule we will not break

The second verb has to match the object. We will not print "Hang it." on a t-shirt, and not because of a style guide — because it would be a claim about the product that is not true.
