A print that takes 90 seconds and lands
The endurance athlete on your list is the hardest one, because they buy their own equipment better than you can. The route is the gap.
Every list has one person who is impossible: the one who runs, rides or swims seriously. Everything they use is technical, personal and already chosen more carefully than you would.
Why the usual options fail
Kit is sized, fitted and brand-loyal. Getting it wrong is normal and getting it right is luck.
Nutrition is a matter of what their stomach tolerates, which you do not know.
Books about the sport are almost always already owned.
Subscriptions are useful and forgotten by February.
What is left is the category that did not exist until they did something: a record of a specific effort, which by definition nobody could have bought in advance.
Two ways to do it
You have the file. Ask for the GPX of a specific activity — most people send one without asking why. Design takes about 90 seconds, and you are choosing size, colour and what goes under the line.
You do not. Use a gift card. They connect the account, pick the route and choose the size. For a ride or a run you were not on, this is genuinely the better version: the effort that mattered to them is rarely the one an outsider would pick.
Timing
Allow a week for printing and shipping, plus a few days of December margin.
Order the frame at the same time. 30×40, 50×70 and 70×100 are standard European sizes, so any high-street framer or flat-pack shop has one on a shelf.
The two-minute version
If it is the 22nd and you have nothing: gift card, sent by email, printed at home on decent paper and put in an envelope. It is not a worse gift than the same card sent digitally with no envelope, and it takes four minutes.
