Apple Watch workouts to a printable file

Apple Health keeps the route but does not hand it over easily. Three ways out, and the one that takes twenty seconds.

The Apple Watch records a perfectly good route. Apple simply does not give you a button for it.

The fast way: through Strava

If the Strava app is installed and permitted to read Health, your outdoor workouts are already there. Open the activity on strava.com and export the GPX as normal.

This is by far the least work, and the route is the same one the watch recorded — Strava does not redraw positions.

The direct way: a third-party app

Several small apps read Health directly and write GPX or FIT. Look for one that asks only for workout and route permission, does its work on the device, and does not require an account. An app that wants to upload your health history to its own server in order to convert a file is asking for far more than the job needs.

The complete way: the Health export

In the Health app, tap your profile picture, then Export All Health Data. You get a zip containing everything, with workout routes as individual GPX files in a `workout-routes` folder.

This is the right method if you want years at once, and the wrong one if you want a single run: the archive can take many minutes to build and is often gigabytes.

What actually gets printed

Whichever route you take, the file that arrives holds coordinates and timestamps. Elevation from an Apple Watch is barometric on Series 3 and later, so it is real measurement rather than a map lookup.

Bring it over and it is drawn in your browser, trimmed at both ends before anything appears.

Questions people actually ask

Does the Apple Watch record a GPS route?
Yes, for outdoor workouts. Outdoor Run, Outdoor Cycle, Hike and Open Water Swim all record position. Indoor equivalents do not.
Can I export a GPX straight from the Fitness app?
No. Apple shows the route on a map but offers no export. This is the whole reason the other methods exist.
Is the Health export any good?
It works but it is heavy: the full Health archive is a very large zip containing every measurement you have ever recorded, with routes as separate GPX files inside.
Which method should I use?
If the workout is already on Strava, export it there. It is faster than everything else and the route is identical.
